Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked controversy with his divisive rhetoric during the ongoing election campaign, aiming to secure a historic third term for his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In a series of rallies, Modi has targeted the country’s Muslim minority, referring to them as “infiltrators” and accusing the opposition Indian National Congress of favoring Muslims over Hindus. The BJP is seeking to win a supermajority in the parliamentary elections, with a target of 370 out of 543 seats.

Critics have condemned Modi’s inflammatory language, with some filing complaints to India’s election commission over alleged violations of the code of conduct. Despite the backlash, the commission has not taken action against Modi or the BJP.

Opposition parties, including Congress, have accused the BJP of neglecting issues like unemployment and inequality while pandering to Hindu nationalist sentiments. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has criticized Modi for allegedly favoring billionaires over the poor.

Analysts are skeptical about the BJP’s ability to significantly increase its seat count, questioning the feasibility of reaching the 370-seat target. The campaign’s divisive tone has also raised concerns among voters, with some expressing weariness over the polarizing rhetoric.

As the election unfolds, the outcome remains uncertain, with strict rules prohibiting the publication of exit polls. The results are set to be announced on June 4 after six weeks of staggered voting, leaving the political landscape in India in a state of anticipation and speculation.
