Narendra Modi expresses concern over attack on Danish PM Mette Frederiksen: ‘Deeply troubled by the incident’ | Global News

Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi expressed his condemnation of the recent attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who was assaulted by a man in Copenhagen. The incident took place at Kultorvet Square, a central piazza in the city, where the assailant forcefully approached Frederiksen and pushed her hard. The Danish Prime Minister suffered minor whiplash but is otherwise fine after the attack, according to her office.

Local media reported that a 39-year-old man was arrested in connection with the assault, and he was scheduled to appear in a pre-trial custody hearing at the Copenhagen District Court. The details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but the police are investigating the matter.

French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also expressed their shock and condemnation of the attack, with Macron calling it “unacceptable” and Stoltenberg referring to Frederiksen as a friend. European Council President Charles Michel labeled the assault as a “cowardly act of aggression.”

The attack comes just days before the EU elections in Denmark and across the 27-nation bloc. Frederiksen has been campaigning with the Social Democrats’ EU lead candidate, Christel Schaldemose, although reports suggest that the attack was not linked to a campaign event. This incident follows a similar attack on a German candidate from the centre-left Social Democrats in May, highlighting the growing concerns over political violence in Europe.
