NASCAR Revisits Refurbished Sonoma Circuit, Anticipates Uncertain Outcomes on Swift, Fresh Pavement

**Sonoma Raceway’s New Asphalt Sparks Speeds and Concerns**

SONOMA, Calif. — The recent repave of Sonoma Raceway, the first in over two decades, has brought about a mix of excitement and concern among NASCAR drivers and teams. The new surface has significantly increased speeds, with Ryan Blaney leading Cup Series practice on Friday by clocking a lap 4.5 seconds faster than last year’s pole-winning run by Denny Hamlin. However, the durability of the new asphalt has come into question after it showed signs of wear during an April sports car test.

The track’s condition required immediate repairs, including several patches, raising doubts about how it would hold up during the high-intensity NASCAR race weekend. Chase Elliott, after a 50-minute practice session, expressed his initial concerns but felt reassured after not observing any visible issues on the track. “I was super concerned coming here and honestly now feel a lot better,” Elliott stated.

Despite the optimism, defending race winner Martin Truex Jr. voiced his preference for the old surface, highlighting the unpredictability the new pavement brings to the race. “There is more of a chance for an upset or for a guy surprising the field, I think, this time around,” Truex mentioned, emphasizing the challenge of passing cars on the new surface.

The repave has also sparked a debate between Denny Hamlin and track owner Marcus Smith, with Hamlin initially criticizing the quality of the repave on social media. The exchange escalated before both parties calmed down, with Hamlin feeling more positive about the track conditions after Friday’s practice.

In addition to the repave, changes were made to the track’s layout, including altering the infamous hairpin at turn 11. This modification has introduced a slight blind spot, adding another layer of challenge for the drivers.

As the race weekend progresses, all eyes will be on the track’s performance under the stress of NASCAR’s heavy cars. The event will also feature two Australian Supercars stars making their NASCAR Cup debuts, adding an international flair to the competition.

With the new surface, increased speeds, and the potential for unpredictable race outcomes, this weekend at Sonoma Raceway is shaping up to be a memorable one. Whether the new asphalt will hold up to the rigors of NASCAR racing remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: the excitement level is at an all-time high.
