National: Ottawa to allocate more than $110 million towards new anti-racism strategy

The federal government of Canada has announced a groundbreaking investment of $110.4 million in an anti-racism and discrimination strategy, aiming to combat racism and discrimination in all its forms. The announcement was made by Canada’s minister of diversity, inclusion, and persons with disabilities, Kamal Khera, at a press conference on Saturday.

Khera emphasized that the funds will support hundreds of projects and impact the lives of thousands of Canadians. The strategy, officially named Changing Systems, Transforming Lives: Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy, is set to run from 2024 to 2028.

A significant portion of the investment, $70 million, will be directed towards local initiatives across the country to provide communities with the necessary resources to combat racism and discrimination effectively. Khera stated that the goal of the strategy is to drive positive change in the lives of Canadians by addressing all forms of racism.

The new anti-racism strategy focuses on four key action areas: promoting economic, social, and cultural empowerment in communities, advancing racial equity in sectors such as immigration, health, and housing, driving action in the justice and public safety systems, and using international engagement to advance racial equity.

According to a press release by the federal government, over 70 federal initiatives will be supported by the funds to ensure that federal policies, programs, and services reflect the diverse population of Canada.

The need for such a strategy is underscored by recent statistics, including a survey by Statistics Canada that found over one in three Canadians have experienced some form of discrimination or unfair treatment in the past five years. Additionally, a report by KPMG revealed that eight in 10 Black Canadians still face discrimination at work.

In her closing remarks, Khera highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and valued. She emphasized that diversity is a fact in Canada, but inclusion is a choice, and as a government, they are committed to making that choice.

The investment in this anti-racism strategy marks a significant step towards building a more inclusive and equitable society in Canada, where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity.
