Hungary Issues Stark Warning of World War with Russia Over Ukraine Conflict

Hungary, a member of NATO, has issued a stark warning about the potential for a new world war if another European country gets directly involved in Ukraine’s fight against Russia. The warning comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin continues his full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that has been ongoing for over two years.

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó expressed concerns about the possibility of a world war if a NATO country were to enter into direct conflict with Russia. Szijjártó’s comments were made at an event organized by the ruling Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Alliance party.

The minister’s warning comes in the wake of NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg’s proposal of a 100 billion euro military aid package to Ukraine. Szijjártó criticized the proposal as “madness” and stated that Hungary would seek to distance itself from the plan.

Hungary’s position on the conflict is complicated by its membership in both NATO and the European Union, which has been a strong supporter of Ukraine. The country’s close ties to Russia, reaffirmed during a meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Putin in 2023, have raised concerns among Western allies.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate, the international community is closely watching the situation and the potential implications for global security. The possibility of a world war involving NATO and Russia is a sobering reminder of the high stakes involved in the ongoing conflict.
