NBA legend Dwyane Wade introduces Translatable, an online platform for transgender youth support

NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade made a triumphant return to South Florida, where he spent over 14 seasons as a guard for the Miami Heat, winning three championships and earning the nickname “Wade County.” However, his most personal battle yet is the one he outlined at The Elevate Prize Foundation’s Make Good Famous Summit.

Wade revealed that the decision to leave Florida and move to California was influenced by the lack of community support for his transgender daughter, Zaya, who came out in 2020 amidst anti-trans legislation in the state. In response, Wade and Zaya launched Translatable, an online community aimed at supporting transgender children and their families.

The Elevate Prize Foundation recognized Wade’s efforts by awarding him the Elevate Prize Catalyst Award, which comes with $250,000 in unrestricted funding for Translatable. Additionally, the foundation made a separate donation to support the initiative.

Wade’s dedication to advocating for trans rights and creating a safe space for families in Florida has garnered praise from various organizations and individuals. Comedian Phoebe Robinson commended Wade for prioritizing humanity over personal gain, while experts in LGBTQ+ youth support emphasized the importance of celebrity allies like Wade in creating positive change.

Dr. Michelle Forcier of FOLX Health highlighted the significance of an online community for trans youth, especially when championed by a celebrity ally like Wade. The impact of Translatable extends beyond financial support, offering hope and resources to a vulnerable community facing discrimination and adversity.

Wade’s commitment to social justice and supporting marginalized communities has solidified his legacy as more than just a basketball icon, but as a humanitarian making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.
