NBC Los Angeles reports on worries about redevelopment plans for the Viper Room in West Hollywood

The iconic Viper Room in West Hollywood is set to undergo a major redevelopment, but not without facing criticism from concerned neighbors. The proposed project, which includes an 11-story hotel with residential units and restaurants, has sparked a debate over the future of the beloved establishment.

Residents in the area have raised objections to the size of the project, arguing that it is too big for the limited space available in the city. Bjorn Johnson, a longtime West Hollywood resident, described the proposed development as a “humungous, gargantuan plot of building on this little space.”

While some residents are not opposed to the idea of redevelopment, they are calling for the developer to be more considerate of the neighborhood’s concerns. Elyse Eisenberg, President of the West Hollywood Heights Association, emphasized that they are not trying to stop the project but simply want their voices to be heard.

One of the main concerns raised by residents is the potential impact on traffic at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Larrabee Street. There are also fears that the project could face delays similar to the Melrose Triangle, a vacant lot that has become an eyesore in West Hollywood.

Developer Charles Essig of Sunset Creek Development has assured the community that the project will include affordable housing and public green space to revitalize the Viper Room and the surrounding area. Despite facing criticism, Essig stated that they have made efforts to address community concerns over the past six years.

The West Hollywood Planning Commission is set to meet to discuss residents’ concerns about the Viper Room redevelopment project, highlighting the ongoing debate surrounding the future of this iconic establishment.
