NC sports betting sees over $659 million wagered in first 3 weeks

North Carolinians have embraced sports betting with enthusiasm, wagering over $659 million in just the first three weeks since it became legal in the state. The North Carolina State Lottery Commission (NCSLC) released a report detailing the sports wagering activity in March, revealing some impressive figures.

Between March 11 and March 31, residents of North Carolina placed bets totaling $659,308,541 on various sports events. This resulted in winnings of $590,750,303. The gross wagering revenue for the month was $66,496,213, with an 18 percent tax imposed on this revenue as per state law.

The tax proceeds from sports wagering revenue will be allocated to various programs and initiatives, including funding for gambling addiction education and treatment, support for youth sports, and grants for collegiate athletic departments at 13 state universities.

Additionally, a portion of the proceeds will go towards a new North Carolina Major Events, Games, and Attractions Fund to stimulate job creation and investment in the state, with the remaining funds being allocated to the state’s General Fund.

As the sports betting industry continues to grow in North Carolina, the NCSLC is currently accepting comments on proposed rule changes related to the wagering process. These changes include updates to facility rules, deadlines for licensees to respond to inquiries, and inspection protocols for wagering facilities.
