NCUTI Gatwa, the first Black actor to play the lead role in “Doctor Who”, is bringing a fresh perspective to the beloved British sci-fi television show as it goes global. The new series, now available to audiences outside the United Kingdom through a collaboration between the BBC and Disney+, promises new villains, monsters, and challenges for the iconic Time Lord.
At the series premiere in Los Angeles, Gatwa expressed his excitement for the new era of “Doctor Who”, stating, “It feels very much like a new era and a fresh era. So, it’s a really great point for people to jump on board to the show.” The actor, known for his role in “Sex Education”, shared his approach to the role, jokingly saying he studied past Doctors to find their weaknesses and improve upon them.
Joining Gatwa is actor Millie Gibson, who plays the Doctor’s new companion Ruby Sunday. Together, they will embark on adventures to the Regency era and war-torn future worlds in the iconic TARDIS, a time-travelling craft in the shape of a police telephone box.
Gibson highlighted the timelessness of “Doctor Who”, noting that the show evolves with each regeneration of the Doctor and continues to captivate audiences. The new series premieres on Disney+ on Friday and on the BBC on Saturday, promising an exciting journey through time and space for fans old and new.
