A Hamas delegation has arrived in Cairo for new talks aimed at reaching a cease-fire in Gaza, where the war between the Iran-backed militant group and Israel is nearing the seven-month mark. Reports suggest that Hamas negotiators are ready to accept an Egypt-brokered deal within hours.
CIA Director Bill Burns has also arrived in Cairo to assist Egyptian mediators in working towards a truce. However, Hamas has not yet formally responded to the latest proposal for a cease-fire and hostage release put forward by US, Egyptian, and Qatari mediators.
Israel, on the other hand, will only consider joining cease-fire talks with Hamas once the militant group responds to the latest internationally mediated proposal. An Israeli official stated that Israel will not agree to end the war as part of an agreement to release its hostages.
The US has urged Israel against a large-scale offensive in Rafah, where about 1.5 million Palestinians have sought shelter. The US has also reportedly told Qatar to expel Hamas if the group continues to reject a cease-fire with Israel.
The conflict between Hamas and Israel has resulted in significant casualties and destruction in Gaza. Hamas fighters killed 1,200 people and took about 250 others hostage, while the Israeli bombardment and ground offensive have claimed the lives of more than 34,000 Palestinians.
The situation remains tense as negotiations continue in Cairo to reach a potential truce and end the ongoing violence in Gaza.
