Negro League Legends Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, and Other Unsung Baseball Stars Step into the Spotlight

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a groundbreaking move, Major League Baseball (MLB) has decided to include Negro League players in its historical record, causing a seismic shift in the all-time statistical leaders in baseball. Names like Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige now stand alongside legends such as Babe Ruth and Cy Young, highlighting the incredible talent that was previously overlooked.

Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, expressed his excitement about the decision, stating, “The work of these historians who have really worked so diligently to unearth these numbers and introduce them in this capacity where baseball fans are getting a glimpse into the lens of the Negro Leagues.”

One notable aspect to consider is that Negro League players excelled in a different era of baseball, with shorter seasons and limited access to stadiums. Despite these challenges, players like Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston, Jud Wilson, Turkey Stearnes, and Mule Suttles have now rightfully earned their place among the greatest to ever play the game.

Gibson, known for his incredible hitting prowess, now holds the title of historical batting champion with a career average of .372, surpassing the legendary Ty Cobb. Charleston, a versatile player and manager, ranks third in baseball history with a .363 batting average. Satchel Paige, considered the best pitcher in Negro Leagues history, boasts an impressive 2.74 ERA and 1,484 career strikeouts.

The induction of players like Buck O’Neil, Jud Wilson, Turkey Stearnes, and Mule Suttles into the Baseball Hall of Fame further solidifies their place in baseball history. These players, who faced adversity and discrimination during their careers, are finally receiving the recognition they deserve for their incredible contributions to the sport.
