Nellie Sanders, Oklahoma’s Education Secretary, Aims for Transformation

Oklahoma Secretary of Education Nellie Sanders is diving headfirst into her new role with summer homework on her plate. In a recent interview with the Tulsa World, Sanders expressed her dedication to supporting students, families, and schools in the state.

Five months into her tenure, Sanders is still in the process of setting goals and gathering information to ensure students are in conducive learning environments. She emphasized the importance of emotional support, access to food, and addressing mental health dynamics for students.

Appointed by Gov. Kevin Stitt in January, Sanders is yet to be confirmed by the Oklahoma Legislature. Despite not having classroom teaching experience, Sanders brings a unique perspective to the role, drawing from personal experiences with dyslexia.

Sanders’ predecessor, Katherine Curry, resigned after just three months, citing political challenges and lack of cooperation from the Education Department. However, Sanders has had a more positive experience in her dealings with the department and State Superintendent Ryan Walters.

One notable decision Sanders made as a former member of the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board was to authorize state sanctioning and funding for a Catholic virtual charter school, despite pending litigation on its constitutionality. Sanders defended her decision, stating her commitment to upholding the U.S. and state constitutions.

As Sanders continues to navigate her new role, her focus remains on advocating for diverse educational options and ensuring all students have the support they need to succeed.
