Nemo from Switzerland makes history as the first nonbinary winner

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Swiss artist Nemo emerged victorious at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, but the road to victory was not without its challenges. In a press conference following their win, Nemo addressed the controversies and tensions that marred the competition, including the last-minute disqualification of Dutch entrant Joost Klein and protests over Israel’s participation.

Reflecting on the intense experience, Nemo expressed disappointment at the lack of love and unity they witnessed during the event. They emphasized the need for Eurovision to continue standing for peace and love in the future, acknowledging that it would require significant work to achieve this goal.

Nemo also revealed that they had to “smuggle” a nonbinary flag into the event, as Eurovision initially prohibited it. Despite the obstacles, Nemo, as the first nonbinary winner of the contest, expressed pride in representing the LGBTQ+ community and hoped to inspire others to stay true to their stories.

The Swiss musician’s winning song, “The Code,” which explores their journey of discovering their nonbinary identity, resonated with audiences and touched many hearts. Nemo’s victory symbolizes a significant milestone in Eurovision history, showcasing the power of authenticity and self-expression on a global stage.
