‘Netanyahu admits to deadly Israeli strike on Rafah: A tragic error’

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a tragic incident in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, at least 45 Palestinians were killed, including displaced people living in tents who were burnt alive, according to Gaza health officials. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has acknowledged the “tragic mistake” after an Israeli strike caused the devastating airstrike.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, has sparked condemnation from around the world, with even some of Israel’s closest allies expressing outrage at the mounting civilian deaths in Gaza. The United States, in particular, has voiced concern over the toll of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Israel has stated that it adheres to international law, despite facing scrutiny in top courts. Last week, one court demanded that Israel halt the offensive in Rafah. The attack on Sunday night is believed to be one of the deadliest in the ongoing conflict, pushing the overall Palestinian death toll above 36,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Rescuers at the scene described the horrific aftermath, with Mohammed Abuassa stating, “We pulled out children who were in pieces. We pulled out young and elderly people. The fire in the camp was unreal.” Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that around half of the dead were women, children, and older adults.

France, a close European ally of Israel, joined the chorus of condemnation, with President Emmanuel Macron calling for an immediate ceasefire and full respect for international law. The city of Rafah, which housed over a million displaced people, has once again become a scene of tragedy and devastation as the conflict continues to escalate.
