China’s Latest AI Chatbot Trained on Xi Jinping’s Doctrine

In a move that highlights the ideological boundaries within which Chinese AI models operate, China has unveiled a new artificial intelligence chatbot trained on President Xi Jinping’s doctrine. The chatbot, developed by China’s cyberspace academy, is based on Xi Jinping Thought, a doctrine that promotes socialism with Chinese characteristics.

The chatbot was trained on seven databases, with six of them focusing on information technologies provided by China’s internet watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China. The seventh and most crucial database was Xi Jinping Thought itself, emphasizing the importance of the Chinese leader’s ideology in the development of AI models.

Xi Jinping Thought, also known as Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, consists of 14 principles that include strengthening national security, socialist values, and improving people’s livelihoods. The chatbot serves as a tool to spread these ideologies and ideas to a wider audience.

Apart from providing information on Xi Jinping’s doctrine, the AI model can generate report outlines, summarize information, and provide translations in Chinese or English. While the chatbot is primarily intended for internal use, its unveiling underscores China’s ambitions to become a global leader in AI by 2030.

With technology firms like Alibaba and Baidu already rolling out Chinese-language AI models for public and commercial use, China’s access to a vast population and data sources gives it a competitive edge in the AI race. However, the strict censorship rules in China mean that these AI models are often limited in their responses to politically sensitive questions.

As the U.S. and China vie for AI supremacy, the development of AI models like the Xi-trained chatbot showcases China’s commitment to leveraging technology for ideological and strategic purposes.
