New Business in Leelanau Pays Homage to Local Family Heritage, Along with Other Updates on Restaurants and Retail Stores

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Dalzell Dairy, a name steeped in history in Leelanau County, is making a comeback in Suttons Bay after 31 years. The iconic dairy brand, known for its milk deliveries for three generations, is now serving up delicious ice cream in the same location where Scoops 22 once stood.

The Dalzell family’s legacy dates back to 1918 when Thomas Roy started a dairy business in Northport. Over the years, the business was passed down through the generations, with Donald J. Dalzell running it for 39 years before retiring in 1993. Now, Haley Fox (née Dalzell) and her husband Jake are carrying on the family tradition with Dalzell Dairy, a tribute to their ancestors.

The ice cream shop had its grand opening last Friday, offering a variety of flavors from local favorites like Moomers and Guernsey Farms Dairy. The shop will be open on weekends for now, with plans to expand hours as summer approaches. In addition to ice cream, Dalzell Dairy also showcases the family’s history with photos and memorabilia from their milk delivery days.

In other Leelanau business news, Scoops 22 will relaunch as a food truck this summer, Great Lakes Chocolate & Dessert Co. is opening a new location in Leland, Dune Bird Winery is hosting live music Sundays, and Farm Club is gearing up for a series of events including a community blood drive and plant sales with added DJ sets.

With Dalzell Dairy’s revival and the exciting developments in the local business scene, Leelanau County is buzzing with new opportunities and flavors for residents and visitors alike.
