Southlake in Newmarket is making strides in cancer care this Cancer Awareness Month by introducing innovative technology to diagnose and treat women’s cancer in the community. With a focus on early detection, the Regional Cancer Program at Southlake is welcoming new mammography machines, the MyoSure System, and the MOLLI 2® System.
Director Lorrie Reynolds emphasized the importance of early detection in treating breast cancer and other women’s cancers, stating that they treat over 1,700 breast cancer patients annually. The addition of advanced technology like the new mammography machines will ensure women have the best experience at Southlake.
The centre is expanding its breast cancer screening program to 1,500 women with the installation of three new mammography machines, two of which have new biopsy capabilities to reduce the number of exams needed. Additionally, the MyoSure System will help detect female reproductive cancers, benefiting an estimated 200 women per year.
Thanks to donor support through the “Here is Where Cancer Meets its Match” campaign, Southlake is able to provide leading-edge care for women in the community. Surgical oncologist and chief of surgery, Sara Temple, expressed pride in the advancements being made at Southlake to improve patient experiences and advance women’s health.
With the World Health Organization predicting a 77% increase in cancer diagnoses by 2050, the upgrades in cancer care at Southlake are crucial. President and CEO of Southlake Foundation, Jennifer Ritter, expressed gratitude to the donor community for their contributions to these important upgrades in care for women.
