New Director Named by Virginia Higher Education Council

A. Scott Fleming has been appointed as the new director of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, marking the end of a yearlong search process. The council, responsible for overseeing Virginia’s public colleges and universities, announced the decision on Thursday.

Fleming, a Springfield resident and a member of the council since last year, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He previously served as the chief strategy officer for Teaching Solutions, an e-learning company focused on early childhood education. Additionally, Fleming has a background in higher education, having worked for the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, and as an executive at the Strada Education Foundation.

In a statement to reporters, Fleming expressed his commitment to providing high-quality education at an affordable rate for Virginia residents. He also highlighted the importance of utilizing technology to better meet the needs of the state and its higher education institutions, particularly in relation to education and the workforce.

Council chair Ken Ampy praised Fleming’s appointment, describing him as a forward-thinking professional with expertise in education. Fleming’s tenure on the council began in July 2023 when he was appointed by Governor Glenn Youngkin. He stepped down from his council position to assume the director role.

Fleming’s first day in office is set for May 28, and he plans to relocate with his family to the Richmond area. With a focus on student outcomes and diversity, equity, and inclusion, Fleming is poised to lead SCHEV into a new era of innovation and progress in higher education in Virginia.
