New EU-GCC visa rules to benefit entrepreneurs, students, and tourists

The European Union’s recent harmonization of Schengen visa rules for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) citizens is set to have a significant impact on travel and business relations between the two regions. According to the EU’s special representative to the Gulf region, Luigi di Maio, the new five-year multiple-entry visa for citizens of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman will streamline the visa application process and encourage more Gulf students, entrepreneurs, and tourists to visit Europe.

Previously, Kuwaiti and Qatari nationals were granted the same five-year multiple-entry visa privilege, while the UAE already had a reciprocal visa-free system with the EU. The decision to extend this benefit to more GCC citizens is seen as a positive step towards strengthening people-to-people relations and promoting cultural exchange.

The move, which came into effect earlier this month, was announced by EU Foreign Affairs Minister Josep Borrell during the first high-level EU-GCC security forum. This decision is part of the EU’s efforts to enhance its strategic partnership with the Gulf region and improve overall relations.

The harmonization of visa rules is not only a practical measure but also a political signal of goodwill towards the GCC countries.
