New Hampshire enacts legislation to curb mistreatment of sports officials by fans and players

The New Hampshire Legislature has taken a stand against harassment and assault of sports officials by passing a new bill that introduces stricter punishments for offenders. Under the new legislation, fans, players, or coaches who are convicted of certain offenses against sports officials could face bans from participating in amateur or professional sports events. Repeat offenses may even lead to a lifetime ban.

The bill defines a “sports official” as anyone enforcing the rules at a sporting event, whether they are paid or volunteers. Senator Lou D’Allesandro, the sponsor of the bill, emphasized the importance of protecting officials, players, and the integrity of the games. He stated that people can become overly agitated and frustrated during sports events, often directing their reactions towards sports officials.

In addition to New Hampshire, other states like California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas have also enacted laws to protect umpires and referees from abuse. Massachusetts, in particular, has faced challenges with a high school referee shortage due to abusive behavior from parents and fans.

Richard Pearson, the associate director of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, highlighted the difficulty in recruiting officials due to the abuse they face. The new legislation in New Hampshire aims to create a safer and more respectful environment for sports officials, players, and spectators alike.
