New Sports to Debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Breakdancing, men in artistic swimming, a marathon race walk mixed relay, kayak cross, and kiteboarding are just a few of the new sports and events coming to the 2024 Paris Olympics. These additions are part of the International Olympic Committee’s efforts to modernize the Games, appeal to younger generations, and promote gender equality.

Breaking, also known as breakdancing, will make its Olympic debut in Paris. Originating in the 1970s as part of hip-hop culture, breaking has evolved into a competitive sport. The competition will feature men’s and women’s events with 16 B-boys and B-girls each, showcasing their best moves in head-to-head battles.

Men will also be making history in artistic swimming, as they will now be allowed to compete in the team event at the Olympics. Italy’s Giorgio Minisini and the U.S.’s Bill May are expected to be among the male athletes participating in this event.

The marathon race walk mixed relay will provide more medal opportunities for women in track and field, with 22 teams of two competing in a 42.195-kilometer relay. This event aims to promote gender equality while showcasing the endurance and skill of the athletes.

Kayak cross adds a new twist to Olympic kayaking, turning it into a full-contact sport where four athletes race down a whitewater course simultaneously. American Evy Leibfarth, Australian Jessica Fox, and Brit Joe Clarke are expected to shine in this debut event.

Lastly, kiteboarding will join the sailing schedule, featuring athletes balancing on boards and using kites to race across the water at high speeds. American Daniela Moroz, a multiple world champion, is a top contender in this exciting new event.

These new sports and events promise to bring fresh excitement and diversity to the 2024 Paris Olympics, showcasing the evolving nature of the Games and the athletes who compete in them.
