New test developed by Temple Health can detect both lung cancer and COPD

Temple Health in Philadelphia is urging long-time smokers and former smokers to take advantage of a simple test that could potentially save lives. Low-dose CT scans are a quick and easy way to screen for lung cancer, yet only about 6% of eligible individuals actually undergo the test.

Melissa Liverpool, a nurse navigator with the Temple Healthy Chest Initiative, emphasizes the importance of regular screenings for adults over 50 who have a history of smoking. The CT scan, covered by Medicare and most insurance companies, not only detects lung cancer but also provides valuable insights into other potential health issues such as thyroid nodules and osteoporosis.

In addition to the CT scan, Temple also includes a lung function test to screen for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This comprehensive approach allows doctors to assess lung capacity and identify any obstructions or restrictions early on.

To encourage more frequent testing, Temple Health provides education, reminder calls, letters, and soon, reminder texts for patients. Liverpool notes that participation in the screening program is on the rise, with the hope that it will become as routine as other cancer screenings in the future.

By detecting problems early, patients can be referred to specialists for timely treatment. With the potential to catch issues before they escalate, these screenings are a crucial step in maintaining lung health for at-risk individuals.
