New UAE student visa rules for first-time applicants and renewals explained

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The UAE’s Digital Government has recently released a comprehensive report for new students registered for the upcoming academic year, detailing the requirements for visa and residency issuance, as well as the procedures for applying for a golden residency. This report aims to address common questions and provide clarity to students navigating the visa process.

Foreign students seeking a student visa must have a guarantee from either their parents residing in the UAE or the university/college where they plan to study. The student affairs offices in universities play a crucial role in facilitating the visa application process. The student visa is initially issued for one year and can be renewed upon submission of proof of continued study.

In terms of sponsoring family members, foreign university students can bring their families to live with them in the UAE if they meet financial requirements and provide suitable housing. Male students under 25 can be sponsored by their parents, while female students can be sponsored regardless of age as long as they hold a student visa.

For outstanding students, the UAE offers golden residency visas. High school students with exceptional academic achievements can obtain a five-year golden residency visa, while university students with outstanding performance can secure a 10-year visa. The eligibility criteria include academic excellence, university classification, and timely graduation.

The student visa application process typically takes 10-20 days, with express processing available for quicker turnaround. It is advisable to start the visa process at least one-two months before the semester begins to ensure timely completion. International students can engage in on-campus and off-campus work with proper permissions from their university and the UAE Labour Department.

The cost of a student residence permit is approximately Dh2,500, excluding additional fees for security deposits, file opening, document legalization, and translation. An extra fee of Dh500 may also apply during the visa application process.

Overall, the UAE’s Digital Government aims to streamline the visa process for new students and provide them with the necessary information to navigate the system effectively. By offering clarity on requirements, procedures, and opportunities, the report serves as a valuable resource for students embarking on their academic journey in the UAE.
