Newport News Public Schools’ Youth Development Department Wins National Recognition
Three years ago, Kyra Wilson would have never imagined herself volunteering for a role that required public speaking or approaching unfamiliar kids. But thanks to Flourish, an empowerment group at Newport News high schools, Kyra has blossomed into a confident senior who is now representing Heritage High on the Mayor’s Youth Commission and mentoring middle school students about financial literacy.
Flourish is just one of the many programs under the Newport News Public Schools’ Youth Development Department, which recently received national recognition for its outstanding infrastructure. The department, which includes a coordinator in every school dedicated to getting each student involved in at least one club, sport, or activity, was honored with the 2024 Magna Awards silver honor in the category for school divisions with more than 20,000 students.
Bridget Adams, the director of youth and family engagement, expressed her gratitude for the award, stating that it validates the hard work and dedication of the department’s staff who go above and beyond to support the students.
Since the pandemic, the department has been focused on rebuilding student engagement, with the goal of increasing student involvement in clubs and activities. Research shows that student engagement is crucial for academic success, as students who participate in extracurricular activities have fewer disciplinary issues, better grades, and attendance.
Students like Kyra and Paul Jones from Woodside High School have seen the positive impact of these programs firsthand. They credit their teachers and mentors for helping them develop important skills, build leadership qualities, and connect with their community.
The Youth Development Department’s commitment to equity ensures that all students have access to these programs, with transportation provided for after-school and weekend events, all free of charge.
As more students get involved in clubs and activities, the school environment has improved, with fewer disciplinary issues and a stronger sense of community among the students. The success of the Youth Development Department serves as a testament to the power of investing in student engagement and empowerment.
