Executive Director of the Jamaica 4-H Clubs, Peter Thompson, is advocating for increased investment in drone technology within the agricultural sector. Thompson highlighted the potential of drones to enhance production efficiency, citing examples of their use in crop spraying and vegetation indexing.
Speaking at the launch of ‘Agrofest 2024’ in Kingston and St. Andrew, Thompson emphasized the benefits of incorporating technology into agriculture. He mentioned how drones are utilized in Europe for crop insurance and livestock monitoring, showcasing their versatility in modern farming practices.
The upcoming event, organized by the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), promises a day filled with agricultural activities and competitions. Scheduled for May 25 at the Hope Gardens complex, ‘Agrofest 2024’ will feature a farm queen competition, speech contest by Jamaica 4-H Clubs, a concert, and a ‘Eat Jamaican’ cook-off by JAS.
Attendees can also look forward to a domino contest, horticulture display, high school exhibit, small ruminant showcase, kids’ village, and even a greased pig competition. The event aims to celebrate Jamaica’s agricultural heritage while promoting the use of technology to drive innovation in the sector.
As Thompson advocates for the integration of drone technology into agriculture, ‘Agrofest 2024’ serves as a platform to showcase the latest advancements in farming practices. With a diverse range of activities planned, the event promises to be a vibrant celebration of Jamaica’s agricultural industry.
