News on the Revitalization of the SEAT Center in the Department of Special Education

The Special Education Assistive Technology Center (SEAT Center) at Illinois State University recently hosted its first open house event for students following a renovation process. The event showcased various assistive technology devices, creative instruction methods, and Braille activities, allowing students to explore and learn about the resources available to them.

Dr. Kim Fisher and the SEAT Center student worker team organized and facilitated the open house, providing students with a hands-on experience with the assistive technology devices. The SEAT Center has been a vital resource for the Department of Special Education, offering a wide range of assistive technology devices to help students develop skills that will benefit them in their future classrooms.

The ultimate goal of the SEAT Center is to prepare both special education and general education students on how to effectively use assistive technology to support students with extensive needs, enabling them to fully participate in school and society. To continue meeting this goal, the SEAT Center is currently fundraising to update and expand its resources.

The Department of Special Education aims to raise $9,000 to purchase essential resources such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) software, switches, switch interfaces, literacy software, visual support software, and switch assessment software. These resources will enhance communication, literacy development, and overall inclusivity in educational environments.

Supporters can contribute to the SEAT Center Assistive Technology fundraiser until April 30, 2024, helping to ensure that students have access to the tools they need to succeed. By investing in these resources, the SEAT Center can continue to create inclusive education environments and empower students with diverse learning needs.
