News: The Independent Institute’s Uncivic Education

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In a shocking turn of events, the late terrorist leader Osama bin Laden’s infamous “Letter to America” resurfaced on TikTok in November 2023, sparking concern among many Americans. The letter, which justified the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people, found an audience among young Americans who were unfamiliar with bin Laden and the tragic events of 9/11.

Further highlighting the lack of knowledge among the youth, a group of students chanting in support of the Palestinian cause were unable to identify the “river to the sea” reference, with some even naming the Caribbean as the sea in question. This ignorance of basic geography reflects a larger issue of uninformed opinions and feelings shaping public discourse in what some describe as a “post-truth” polity.

The root of this problem lies in America’s educational system, which fails to provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge about their nation’s history and institutions. While courses in history, civics, and social studies are mandatory, the National Assessment of Educational Progress reveals that only 13 percent of eighth graders are proficient in U.S. history.

Moreover, the shift towards emphasizing critical thinking over factual knowledge in schools and colleges has led to a generation of students who lack a basic understanding of key historical events. This “uncivic education” not only hampers students’ ability to analyze facts critically but also perpetuates negative beliefs about America without providing the necessary context for evaluation.

In essence, the prevalence of uncivic education threatens to erode the very fabric of American democracy, as citizens who are ill-informed and misinformed are unable to engage meaningfully in public discourse. It is imperative for educational institutions to prioritize a balanced and factual approach to teaching history and civics to ensure that future generations are equipped with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary for active citizenship.
