The NFL has found itself in the midst of controversy after Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker delivered a commencement speech at Benedictine College that sparked backlash. In the speech, Butker expressed his conservative Catholic beliefs, leading to criticism from various groups.
During the address, Butker spoke out against what he referred to as “dangerous gender ideologies,” seemingly alluding to the upcoming Pride Month in June. He also encouraged women in the audience to embrace the role of a homemaker, a statement that further fueled the backlash against him.
Butker also took aim at President Joe Biden’s policies, as well as issues such as abortion, IVF, and surrogacy. Additionally, he quoted Taylor Swift’s song “Bejeweled” and made a reference to his teammate Travis Kelce during the speech.
In response to the controversy, the NFL’s Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Jonathan Beane, released a statement distancing the league from Butker’s views. Beane emphasized that Butker’s speech was delivered in his personal capacity and does not reflect the values of the NFL as an organization.
Former Kansas City LGBTQ Commission Chair, Justice Horn, also criticized Butker on social media, stating that Butker does not represent the inclusive values of Kansas City. The backlash against Butker’s speech highlights the ongoing tensions around issues of diversity and inclusion in sports and society.
