NGO Provides $40,000 Grant to Support Agritech Entrepreneurship in Nigeria

Heifer International, an NGO, is offering a $40,000 grant to youths and women in Nigeria to participate in the 2024 AYuTe Africa Challenge. This initiative aims to promote innovative and technology-driven agri-centric enterprises in order to address food insecurity and transform the agricultural sector.

Dr. Lekan Tobe, the Country Director (Interim) of Heifer International, emphasized the importance of youth and technology in agriculture, stating that without the involvement of these demographics, the country will not be ready for agricultural transformation and food security. The AYuTe Challenge focuses on Agriculture Youths and Technology, with a special emphasis on including women who make up 50% of the population.

Chuba Eziegwe, the Communications Manager of Heifer International Nigeria, highlighted the organization’s commitment to supporting smallholder farmers and bridging the living income gap. He emphasized the need to leverage young people in agriculture, similar to the revolution seen in other sectors like fintech and health tech.

Tajudeen Yahaya, the Chief Executive Officer of Extension Africa and a previous winner of the AYuTe Africa Challenge, advised applicants to stay focused and make their work simple and clear. He emphasized the opportunities for networking and mentorship that the challenge provides, as well as the potential for scaling up ideas not just in Nigeria but across Africa.

Mustapha Abokede, the Venture Lead at Wennovation, an implementing partner of the challenge, encouraged women to participate in order to accelerate agritech entrepreneurship in Nigeria. The AYuTe Africa Challenge aims to empower young entrepreneurs, transform the agricultural sector, and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.
