Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador and South Carolina governor, has made headlines by announcing her decision to vote for Donald Trump in the upcoming November elections. This comes as a surprise to many, considering Haley’s previous criticisms of Trump during the Republican primary elections.

Speaking at the Hudson Institute thinktank in Washington on Wednesday, Haley stated that while Trump has not been perfect in foreign policies, Joe Biden has been a “catastrophe.” She emphasized the importance of backing allies, punishing enemies, promoting capitalism and freedom, and reducing the national debt as her criteria for choosing a president.

Haley’s decision to support Trump has sparked a backlash from some within the Republican party. Political strategist Sarah Longwell criticized Haley for falling in line with Trump despite her previous criticisms of him. Former Republican congressman Joe Walsh accused Haley of being untruthful in order to maintain her career within the party.

Despite dropping out of the primaries in March, Haley continued to draw significant support, with up to 20% in some contests, posing a warning sign for Trump’s campaign. While Trump has dismissed the idea of appealing to Haley’s voters, Biden has expressed openness to welcoming them into his campaign.

During the event, Haley also took aim at far-right Republicans who advocate for isolationism, warning that ignoring global issues could put America in great danger. Her endorsement of Trump, along with other former Republican primary opponents, adds another layer of complexity to an already contentious election season.
