NKT Completes Inspection Survey and Remediation Work on East West HVDC Interconnector

Danish subsea cable and services firm NKT has successfully completed inspection survey and remediation work on the East West HVDC interconnector that connects Ireland and Great Britain. The specialized work was carried out to ensure the cable is brought back to optimal conditions, allowing the owner, EirGrid Interconnector Designated Activity Company (EIDAC), to enhance the longevity and performance of the infrastructure.

EIDAC enlisted NKT to conduct the inspection survey of the East West HVDC interconnector in order to optimize its performance. The survey included a thorough characterization of seabed conditions along the cable, leading to the placement of concrete mattresses and rock bags under exposed sections of the interconnector.

“We are pleased to announce that both the inspection survey and remediation work following the survey have been successfully completed,” said Axel Barnekow Widmark, Executive Vice President of Service at NKT. “EIDAC is a long-standing partner to NKT, and the long-term service agreement is a testament to the strong collaboration between our companies to optimize the performance of their interconnector.”

Subsea cables are constantly exposed to harsh environments and extreme conditions, making regular inspection crucial to identifying potential issues and preventing cable failures. By addressing emerging changes in the cable’s environment, NKT’s work contributes to improving the operational performance of the East West HVDC interconnector.
