The travel and tourism sector in India is set to experience a significant boom in job creation, with an estimated 5.82 crore jobs expected to be added by 2033, according to NLB Services. The CEO of NLB Services, Sachin Alug, highlighted the sector’s resilience during the pandemic, with 39 million jobs in 2020 and a quick recovery post-pandemic.
Talent demand in tourism saw a 44% spike in August 2023, with an additional 1.6 million jobs projected to be added in the same year. By 2033, the sector is expected to add a total of 58.2 million jobs across the country, contributing significantly to employment generation.
The travel and tourism industry also plays a crucial role in the economy, contributing Rs 15.9 lakh crore in 2022 and an estimated Rs 16.5 lakh crore in 2023. Top states attracting domestic tourists include Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, while cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru are driving the increase in hiring.
In terms of job profiles, sales, business development, chefs, travel consultants, and tour operators are among the roles experiencing high demand. The sector is also witnessing a transformation, with subsets like destination wedding travel, religious tourism, and sustainable tourism gaining popularity.
Companies are adopting the gig model to address talent shortages, with a 14% increase in gig roles within the travel and tourism sector since January 2023. This trend is expected to continue, with a projected 18-20% increase in gig roles in the next two years. The future looks bright for the travel and tourism sector in India, with ample opportunities for job seekers and industry growth on the horizon.
