North Korea’s Kim Jong Un oversees test firing of multiple rocket launcher | Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test firing of a new multiple rocket launch system, signaling the country’s intent to bolster its arsenal targeting South Korean population centers. The test, conducted on Friday, showcased the destructive power of the 240-millimeter multiple rocket launcher and its guided shells, which are set to replace older weapons in combat units from 2024 to 2026.

Amid stalled diplomacy with the United States and South Korea, North Korea has ramped up its weapons testing activities in recent months. Experts believe Kim’s objective is to pressure the U.S. into recognizing North Korea as a nuclear power, enabling negotiations for economic and security concessions.

The focus on artillery systems in recent weeks includes salvo launches of 600-mm multiple rocket launchers, simulating a nuclear counterattack against enemy targets. Additionally, cruise missile tests and the flight-testing of a solid-fuel intermediate range missile with hypersonic warhead capabilities have raised concerns about reaching remote U.S. targets in the Pacific.

Following the latest test, Kim instructed the maximization of production for the multiple rocket launchers and guided shells, emphasizing their potential to enhance combat capabilities significantly. South Korean military officials suspect that North Korea’s recent tests may also be aimed at exporting weapons to Russia, amidst accusations of military equipment support to aid Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.

Kim’s efforts to strengthen ties with Moscow and Beijing suggest a strategic shift towards breaking diplomatic isolation and aligning against Washington. As North Korea continues to advance its military capabilities, the region remains on high alert for potential escalations in tensions.
