Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, made a strong start at the French Open with a convincing victory over Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Despite doubts about his form coming into the tournament, Djokovic showed his class with a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 win on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The Serbian star, who is aiming for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, had expressed “low expectations and high hopes” before the tournament due to some recent defeats. However, he looked in fine form against Herbert, winning in straight sets.

Djokovic, who has a remarkable record in Grand Slam tournaments, winning 72 of his 74 first-round matches, faced a minor scare when he took a tumble in the third set. Despite this, he remained focused and closed out the match comfortably.

In a post-match interview, Djokovic expressed his love for Grand Slam events, saying they are what motivates him to keep playing at the highest level. He also mentioned that he felt good on the court and is moving in a positive direction.

Meanwhile, Casper Ruud also made a winning start at the French Open, defeating Brazilian qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves in straight sets. Ruud, who has been a finalist in the last two French Opens, gained some family revenge as his father was beaten by Alves’ uncle in a previous tournament.

With both Djokovic and Ruud looking strong in their opening matches, tennis fans can expect more exciting action as the tournament progresses. Stay tuned to Sky Sports Tennis for all the latest updates and live coverage of the French Open and upcoming grass-court events.
