Novak Djokovic’s Italian Open campaign came to a shocking end as he suffered a comprehensive defeat to world No 32 Alejandro Tabilo in Rome. The six-time champion was outplayed by the Chilean, who took full advantage of Djokovic’s error-strewn performance to secure a convincing 6-2 6-3 victory in just 67 minutes.
Djokovic, seeking his 1,100th career win, struggled throughout the match, committing 22 unforced errors, serving five double faults, and failing to create a single break point on Tabilo’s serve. The tone was set early on when Djokovic saved three break points in the opening game but ultimately lost his serve to Tabilo.
The 26-year-old Tabilo continued to dominate the match, holding serve with ease and capitalizing on Djokovic’s mistakes. Djokovic’s hopes of a comeback in the second set were dashed as he started with consecutive double faults, allowing Tabilo to break his serve once again.
After the match, Tabilo expressed his disbelief at the victory, stating, “I can’t believe what just happened.” The win marks a significant milestone in Tabilo’s career and serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of tennis.
As Djokovic exits the Italian Open, fans can look forward to the upcoming French Open at Roland Garros and watch all the action live on Sky Sports as the biggest tennis stars compete across the clay-court season.
