Nurturing Student Entrepreneurial Abilities through a “Shark Tank”-Inspired Program

Startable Program in Pittsburgh Fosters Young Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurship knows no age limits, and one startup support organization in Pittsburgh is proving just that. Startable, a program of Innovation Works, is taking extra steps to foster creativity and business acumen in young people aged 13 through 18.

This youth program offers students a unique experience where they can create and launch their own hardware products in a “Shark Tank”-like atmosphere. Hosted at participating schools, Startable provides funding to cover teacher support and supplies, allowing students to bring their innovative ideas to life and keep the profits from their products and businesses.

Students at six participating schools in the Pittsburgh area have already launched impressive innovations, including a water-powered engine, apparel for individuals with limb deficiencies, and a budgeting device. The program not only encourages creativity and innovation but also teaches valuable skills such as organization, collaboration, and communication.

Shelley Brown, Startable’s Program Manager, highlighted the importance of preparing students to tackle global challenges with new creativity and fresh perspectives. The program, now in its tenth year, has seen students go on to launch products and pursue entrepreneurship after completing the program.

While entrepreneurship may not be the path for everyone, the skills learned in programs like Startable can be applied to a wide range of career paths. By providing a low-risk environment for young people to explore entrepreneurship, Startable is helping students uncover their passions and potential as future successful entrepreneurs.
