Reading Time: < 1 minute

The South Yorkshire Institute of Technology (SYIoT) has officially launched, heralding a new era of world-class technical education and training in the region. With over £21m in funding from the Department for Education, SYIoT is set to deliver high-quality, higher-level technical education and training provision.

As one of only 21 Institutes of Technology (IoTs) in the country, the launch of SYIoT represents a major investment and recognition of the region’s higher education providers. The education partners involved in this initiative include DN Colleges Group, Sheffield Hallam University, Barnsley College, The University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre, The Sheffield College, and RNN Group.

The focus of SYIoT will be on key technical sectors such as engineering and manufacturing, digital, construction and the built environment, health, science, and media and communications. The institute already collaborates with over 5000 employers in the region, with a particular emphasis on reaching out to small and medium-sized businesses.

Karen Mosley, Managing Director of HLM Architects and Chair of SYIoT, expressed her excitement about the launch, highlighting the partnership between employers and education providers. The institute will specialize in Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs), professional training, and higher apprenticeships, aiming to widen opportunities in higher education.

With a focus on flexibility and affordability, SYIoT aims to provide individuals of all ages with access to higher education, enabling them to enter or progress within employment. Employers will also benefit from funding support for apprenticeships and guidance on available funding streams.

Overall, the launch of SYIoT signifies a significant step towards developing the skills base required to meet the region’s challenges and encourage investment in higher technical job opportunities. The institute’s first learners have already started their programs, paving the way for exciting developments in the years to come.
