Official Opening of N7 Refinery Interchange

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Premier Alan Winde and Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers celebrated the grand opening of the newly upgraded N7 Refinery Interchange on Friday, 26 April. The Western Cape Government (WCG) emphasized the importance of making the province’s roads safer and more efficient, especially with the continuous influx of new residents.

The project, which began in July 2021, aimed to enhance traffic operations and safety by constructing a dual carriageway system along Plattekloof Road. The more than R250 million investment included various components such as new carriageways, overpass bridges, and road widening.

One of the significant highlights of the project was the replacement of the existing bridge, which was inadequate for heavy vehicles on the N7. The new interchange features two bridges dedicated to westbound and eastbound traffic, completing the dualling of Plattekloof Road.

The construction process not only improved infrastructure but also provided employment opportunities for 534 individuals and supported 47 local businesses, including small, medium, and micro enterprises.

Minister Tertuis Simmers emphasized the importance of the upgraded interchange in accommodating the region’s growing population and enhancing economic connectivity. The completion of the N7 Interchange signifies a significant milestone for the Western Cape, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable development and economic prosperity along the N7 corridor.

By investing in smarter, long-term infrastructure solutions, the Western Cape Government aims to unlock economic opportunities and ensure safer, more efficient travel for all residents. The upgraded N7 Interchange is expected to play a crucial role in supporting the province’s future growth and social well-being.
