Russian attacks on Orthodox Easter Sunday resulted in the death of a woman and injured 17 people in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The regional governor, Oleh Syniehubov, reported that six people were injured in an overnight drone attack in the Osnovyanskyi district, with ten more injured later in the day by aerial bombs in the city center.
Residents were shocked and devastated by the attacks, with one woman expressing disbelief that such violence could occur on a holy day. Natalia Avilova-Patrikeyeva, standing outside her damaged apartment building, lamented the lack of peace even on Easter Sunday.
Kharkiv has been a frequent target of Russian attacks in recent weeks, despite Russia’s claims that they do not target civilian sites. The city previously endured a prolonged assault during the early days of the Russian invasion in 2022.
Stunned residents gathered in the aftermath of the attacks, with forensic experts searching for shrapnel and residents recounting their harrowing experiences. One resident, Roza Kuzmenko, described hiding under a table as the explosion rocked her building.
Tragically, an 88-year-old woman lost her life in the shelling of the village of Monachynivka, east of Kharkiv, with a man also sustaining injuries. The ongoing violence in the region continues to take a toll on innocent civilians.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the attacks, the international community watches closely, hoping for an end to the senseless violence that has plagued Ukraine.
