Oman’s Travel and Tourism Industry Poised for Record Growth

The future of Oman’s travel and tourism sector looks brighter than ever, according to the latest Economic Impact Research by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). With strong government support and strategic initiatives in place, the sector is set to not only recover but also experience unprecedented growth in 2024.

In 2023, the travel and tourism sector’s contribution to Oman’s GDP saw a significant increase of almost 35%, reaching RO2.8bn and showing promising signs of surpassing previous records. Job growth in the sector also soared by 15%, with 191,500 individuals now employed nationwide.

The WTTC is forecasting even more growth for the sector in 2024, with a projected GDP contribution of over RO3.3bn, accounting for 7.6% of the country’s economy. The number of individuals employed in the sector is expected to rise to over 206,000, with one in 14 people working in travel and tourism.

International visitors played a crucial role in boosting Oman’s economy last year, injecting RO1.1bn, a remarkable 69% increase from 2022. Domestic traveler spending also rebounded to RO1.4bn, with predictions of further growth to reach RO1.5bn in 2024.

Oman’s status as a premier tourist destination in the Middle East is solidified by strategic government investments and support. Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, commended Oman’s government for its strong support of the sector, aiming for historic economic growth and job creation in 2024.

Dr. Hashil al Mahrouqi, CEO of Omran Group, emphasized the significant growth of Oman’s travel and tourism industry, attributing it to the robust support of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and Oman Investment Authority. The commitment to strategic developments across the country is expected to further enhance Oman’s position as a top travel destination and drive socio-economic growth.
