Calgary has bid farewell to its long-standing slogan “Be Part of the Energy” and welcomed a new era as “Blue Sky City.” The rebranding exercise, led by Calgary Economic Development (CED) and its partners, aims to capture the essence of the city’s blue skies that residents and visitors enjoy 333 days a year.
The unveiling of the new brand took place at the Report to the Community event, where city officials and organizational leaders gathered to celebrate the city’s potential and future. The shift from red, a color synonymous with Calgary’s sports teams and iconic landmarks, to blue signifies a new direction for the city.
CED head Brad Parry emphasized that the rebranding is not a departure from the city’s energy sector roots but a reflection of Calgary’s evolution and diversification. The new slogan aims to promote inclusivity and unity, with input from various community groups, including immigrants, 2SLGBTQ+, and Indigenous communities.
While some may feel nostalgic for the old slogan, the new identity of “Blue Sky City” represents hope, optimism, and endless possibilities. As Calgary navigates through challenges like wildfires and changing economic landscapes, the blue skies serve as a reminder of resilience and faith in the city’s future.
As the city prepares to roll out the new brand across various platforms, the debate and conversation surrounding the rebranding efforts are expected to continue. Whether it’s a hit like the blue skies or a miss like past slogans, Calgary’s leaders are committed to embracing this new identity and showcasing the city’s potential to the world.
