Ontario universities issue warning against student encampments

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Two Ontario universities, the University of Toronto and the University of Ottawa, are warning against setting up encampments on campus following the lead of pro-Palestinian student activists in the U.S. and Canada. The universities acknowledge the tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict but emphasize that protests must be organized within the limits of university policies and the law.

The University of Toronto’s vice-provost of students, Sandy Welsh, stated that unauthorized activities like encampments or occupying university buildings are considered trespassing. Similarly, the associate vice-president of student affairs at the University of Ottawa, Eric Bercier, warned that any encampment set up on campus would face serious consequences.

Despite these warnings, a group of activists gathered on the University of Ottawa campus with lawn chairs, picnic tables, and snacks, although no tents were visible. The activists expressed their intention to protest various issues, including the university’s relationship with Scotiabank, due to the bank’s investments in an Israeli arms firm.

These warnings come after a similar encampment was set up by pro-Palestinian student activists at McGill University in Montreal. The activists are demanding divestment from Israeli companies and the cutting of academic ties with Israeli institutions. The camp at McGill has been deemed a violation of school policies and the law.

Protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict have been escalating on campuses in the U.S. as well, with Columbia University issuing ultimatums to protesters to leave or face suspension. The protests have sparked demonstrations across the U.S., with students demanding their universities sever financial ties with Israel.

The situation remains tense on campuses as students continue to engage in standoffs with administrators over their demands. Ontario Premier Doug Ford emphasized the importance of peaceful protests and inclusivity, urging everyone to voice their opinions peacefully.
