OpenAI to incorporate News Corp. news content in new multiyear partnership

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a groundbreaking move, OpenAI has announced a multiyear deal with News Corp. to utilize news content from the media giant for training purposes and to provide answers to user queries. This collaboration marks a significant shift in the relationship between artificial intelligence companies and news organizations, with OpenAI opting to work alongside News Corp. rather than against it.

Under the terms of the deal, OpenAI will have access to a wide range of content from News Corp.’s major publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, and The Daily Telegraph. While the financial details of the agreement were not disclosed, sources suggest that it could be worth over $250 million over five years.

This partnership is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to collaborate with media companies for content access. The company has previously struck deals with The Associated Press, Axel Springer, Prisa Media, Le Monde, and the Financial Times for similar purposes.

The News Corp. deal, however, stands out as it allows OpenAI to use news content to directly answer user questions, a departure from the traditional training-focused agreements. This move comes at a time when tech giants like Google are shifting towards more direct answers in search results, bypassing traditional news articles.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, hailed the partnership as a significant step towards bridging the gap between journalism and technology. The deal has also been praised by industry experts, with Moody’s Ratings senior vice president Jason Cuomo calling it credit positive and a validation of News Corp.’s media brands’ value.

Overall, the OpenAI-News Corp. collaboration represents a new era of cooperation between AI and journalism, setting the stage for future innovations in the industry.
