A Taste of Latin America in Ottawa’s ByWard Market

A shipping container in the heart of Ottawa’s ByWard Market is serving up a taste of Latin America with delicious empanadas from Delights by Mama. This unique pop-up shop is part of a new program by Immigrant Entrepreneur Canada, aimed at helping new Canadians test their businesses in a real-world setting.

Founder and CEO of Immigrant Entrepreneur Canada, Karla Briones, explains that the Summer Retail Incubator 2024 program offers immigrant entrepreneurs hands-on experience and direct feedback from customers. More than 20 companies will participate this summer, showcasing a variety of products in the high-traffic location on York Street.

For the co-owners of Delights by Mama, Ivana Hernandez and Jessica Gutierrez, the opportunity to share their Latin American cuisine with Ottawa residents is a dream come true. “Everyone’s been so welcoming, so I really, really love it,” says Gutierrez. The positive response from customers has them one step closer to opening their own restaurant.

The program not only provides exposure for these entrepreneurs but also helps them refine their business strategies and build a customer base in a vibrant market environment. From chocolate to hot sauce to pet accessories, the popup container will feature a diverse range of products throughout the summer.

“It gives us the opportunity to have exposure and let the community know us,” says Hernandez. With the support of programs like this, immigrant entrepreneurs are able to showcase their talents and contribute to the local economy in a meaningful way.
