Opposition parties convene urgent discussions on ANC’s unity proposal | Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

South African opposition parties are in the midst of intense negotiations following the ruling African National Congress’ (ANC) failure to secure a majority in the recent election. The ANC has extended an offer to form a government of national unity, inviting all parties to join in a complex process that is expected to be challenging due to deep divisions among the opposition.

The main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) and the leftist Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are among the parties deliberating on the ANC’s proposal. While some parties, like ActionSA, have already rejected the offer, others, such as the Inkatha Freedom Party, have expressed willingness to participate in the unity government.

The ANC’s decision to pursue a government of national unity comes after its worst electoral performance, dropping from 57.5% in 2019 to 40% this year. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement of the proposal has been met with mixed reactions, with EFF leader Julius Malema criticizing the ANC’s approach as arrogant.

The negotiations are crucial as South Africa’s constitution mandates a resolution within 14 days of the election results declaration. The parties are under pressure to reach an agreement by June 16, with various issues such as land redistribution and affirmative action adding complexity to the discussions.

As the talks continue, the political landscape in South Africa remains uncertain, with the outcome of the negotiations likely to shape the country’s governance in the coming years. Stay tuned for further developments as opposition parties navigate the path towards a potential government of national unity.
