As expectant mothers embark on their pregnancy journey, ensuring optimal health becomes a top priority. This is crucial not only for the well-being of the mother but also for the healthy development of the fetus. In a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO), it was revealed that in 2022, there were over 14.1 lakh new cancer cases in India, resulting in more than 9.1 lakh deaths. Among women, breast and cervical cancer were identified as the most commonly diagnosed cancers.

To reduce the risk of developing cancer during pregnancy, expectant mothers should keep the following factors in mind:

Maintain a balanced diet: It is essential for expectant mothers to consume a nutrient-rich balanced diet. This should include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants necessary for cellular repair and immune function, potentially reducing the risk of cancer. Specific diets such as green leafy vegetables, legumes, and fortified cereals can also help lower the risk of cancer.

Stay hydrated: Adequate hydration is crucial during pregnancy as water helps in the transport of nutrients, elimination of waste products, and overall bodily functions. Pregnant women should ensure they drink enough water throughout the day to support hydration and overall health.

Limit intake of processed foods: Expectant mothers should avoid processed foods, sugary snacks, and refined carbohydrates. These items lack essential nutrients and can contribute to weight gain and inflammation, increasing the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

Avoid intoxicants: Tobacco, alcohol, and smoking should be avoided during pregnancy as they are associated with an increased risk of various cancers. It is important to steer clear of these substances to protect fetal development and maternal health.

Avoid pollution: Environmental factors can also play a significant role in cancer development. Pregnant women should try to avoid polluted air as much as possible. Additionally, using sunscreen can help reduce the risk of skin cancer by limiting exposure to harmful UV rays.

Physical activity: Regular physical activity during pregnancy is beneficial for both the mother and the fetus. Moderate exercise, such as slow walking or prenatal yoga, not only promotes physical fitness but also helps with stress management and mood improvement, contributing to overall well-being during pregnancy.

In a country like India where cancer rates are high, it is crucial for women to take extra care of their health during pregnancy. The health of both the mother and the child depends on the mother’s well-being during this critical time. By following these guidelines, expectant mothers can experience a healthy pregnancy and protect themselves and their child from dangerous diseases like cancer.
