Outrage mounts over child abuse images charge against TV host Mickey Huang

Taiwanese TV host Mickey Huang Tzu-chiao has sparked controversy after being fined for possessing videos featuring minors. Huang, a well-known presenter in Taiwan, was ordered to pay a fine of 1.2 million NTD ($37,000; £30,000) and write an apology letter after seven such videos were found on his portable hard drive. Despite the penalty, Huang will avoid prosecution if he behaves for two years.

The case has reignited calls to increase penalties for possessing images of child sex abuse in Taiwan. Campaigners have criticized the prosecutor’s decision, stating that the penalties are too lenient given the gravity of the charges. Taiwanese celebrities have also issued an open letter urging lawmakers to establish a stronger safety net for children in the country.

Huang, who has apologized for the incident, has faced previous allegations of sexual misconduct. Last year, two women accused him of inappropriate behavior, including forcibly kissing a 17-year-old and coercing her into taking nude photos. Despite these allegations, the Taipei District Prosecutors Office decided not to pursue further action due to a lack of evidence.

The case has prompted discussions about how to prevent similar incidents in the future and support victims of sexual exploitation. Premier Chen Chien-jen has emphasized the government’s “absolute zero tolerance” for the sexual exploitation of children, but campaigners argue that more needs to be done to address the root causes of such crimes. Huang, who is also under investigation for drug accusations, remains a controversial figure in Taiwan.
