Over Two Billion People in Africa Will Cast Their Votes This Year – LGBTQI+ Individuals Should Not Be Left Out

In a historic ‘super election’ year with billions of people voting, the focus is on strengthening laws and policies that respect the human rights of all individuals, including LGBTQI+ communities. Despite progress, one third of countries still have laws criminalizing same-sex relationships, leading to exclusion and discrimination in the political process.

UNDP has been at the forefront of breaking down barriers and advocating for LGBTQI+ rights globally. Through partnerships with organizations like Luxembourg, UNDP has launched initiatives to support LGBTQI+ individuals in political and electoral processes. Efforts include providing tools for policymakers and civil society to promote equal civic and political rights, freedom of expression, and access to public services.

Furthermore, UNDP is working in 72 countries to integrate LGBTQI+ issues into development efforts, including media skills training to challenge negative stereotypes. With the support of partners, UNDP is combatting online harassment targeting LGBTQI+ individuals and advocating for the decriminalization of consensual same-sex relationships worldwide.
