The World Bank’s Impact on Honduras: A Story of Resilience and Development

In the wake of the devastating tropical storms Eta and Iota that hit Honduras in November 2020, the World Bank swiftly responded to assist the government in the rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. The project funded by the World Bank not only addressed immediate emergency needs but also focused on building resilient infrastructure to mitigate future disasters.

One of the key areas of focus for the World Bank in Honduras has been disaster risk management. Through the construction of 18 schools built to resilient standards, approximately 117,000 people have benefited, with high citizen satisfaction rates. Additionally, ongoing projects in education, water, sanitation, transport, and health sectors aim to re-establish public services and increase their resilience.

The World Bank’s support has also extended to governance and rural development in Honduras. By updating poverty measurement methodologies and implementing projects like the Rural Competitiveness Project, small rural producers have seen increased productivity and market linkages. The impact of these projects has been significant, with a 57 percent increase in the gross sales volume of rural producers and improved financial inclusion for small farmers.

Furthermore, initiatives in education and social protection have expanded school coverage in disadvantaged communities and provided assistance to vulnerable populations, including at-risk children and families living in extreme poverty.
