Pakistan, Somalia, Denmark, Greece, and Panama have been elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for a two-year term starting in 2025. The members were elected by a secret ballot in the UN General Assembly, with Pakistan receiving 182 votes, Somalia 179 votes, Panama 183 votes, Denmark 184 votes, and Greece 182 votes.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed pride in the country’s election to the Security Council, stating that Pakistan looks forward to working with the international community to address global challenges and promote peace, stability, and cooperation among nations.
This marks Pakistan’s 8th time being elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. The country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to upholding the UN Charter’s vision of preventing war, promoting peace, fostering global prosperity, and respecting human rights.
Pakistan’s election to the Security Council reflects its dedication to contributing effectively to international peace and security in line with the Council’s mandate. The country is eager to work closely with other Council members and the broader UN Membership to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and pursue a vision of global peace and cooperation.
